As you know, the nature of foster care makes a child's life very transient: they change placements, schools, case managers, etc.--all factors that make it difficult for tutors to have a lasting impact on a child's development. In order to overcome these barriers, AFC developed this non-site based program with volunteers who agree to stay with the child, when possible, even if his/her placement changes. We also plan and track each child's progress through close relationships with all of the people in the child's life to ensure the best possible success.
Locations: AFC serves children throughout Maricopa County. Tutoring is conducted at a public site agreed upon by the volunteer and the child's placement provider. Public libraries are the recommended location, but if there is not a local library or branch convenient to both parties, AFC suggests alternative locations.
Time Commitment: Participants are required to meet with their mentor two times a week for one hour. They also have the option to attend a monthly outing sponsored by AFC, and to participate in individual activities planned by the mentor and mentee, provided permission is given by the placement provider.
Volunteer Training and Support: Volunteers will be informed of training at a Mentor Orientation. To get a head start, simply click on "Current Mentors Click Here" at the top of this page and view the videos in the Tutor/Mentor Portal.
Background check: AFC requires volunteers to be finger-printed and conducts a background check prior to matching them with a foster child.

Once we have received your completed application, we will begin the matching process.
We will also schedule a meeting with the volunteer, the Mentor/Tutor Program Coordinator, the child's care giver or case manager and the child. If everyone involved is satisfied with the match the volunteer will begin their mentoring by meeting with the child 2 to 3 hours each week.
